SEO Agency vs Freelancer: Which Should You Hire?

In short

Agencies offer more people; freelancers offer more of one person. Which suits your business depends on the work, not the label. An honest comparison from someone who is a freelancer.

I'm a freelancer, so take this with that in mind — but I'll argue both sides fairly. The choice between an SEO agency and an SEO freelancer comes down to three questions: how much work there is, who will actually do it, and who you can call when something breaks.

When an agency is the better choice

Agencies make sense for big, parallel workloads: hundreds of pages of content a month, several languages, PR and link outreach, all at once. They also cover holidays and sick days. You pay for that capacity and for account managers between you and the specialists.

When a freelancer is the better choice

A freelancer suits small and mid-size businesses where SEO touches the website itself — speed, structure, schema, landing pages. The same person who audits can fix the code, so changes ship in days rather than tickets. You talk to the person doing the work.

Questions to ask either one

Whoever you hire, ask:

  • Who exactly will work on my site, and what is their experience?
  • Can you change the website code yourselves, or only advise?
  • What will I receive every month, in writing?
  • Will I own all accounts and content if we stop?

Where a developer-SEO fits

My own niche is SEO done by someone who also builds the site: technical SEO, structured data, AEO and GEO, plus the pages that bring enquiries. For Crystal Beats in Nadiad, for example, the website itself includes city pages for local search. For Yantram Animation Studio, I owned SEO end to end, with paid campaigns aligned to organic growth.

How to run a fair trial before a long contract

Instead of a 12-month contract, start with a paid audit or a short first phase with clear deliverables — for example, fix indexing issues, rewrite the main service pages and set up Business Profile and tracking. You'll see how the person or agency works, how they communicate and whether they deliver what they promised.

Agree in writing what happens at the end of the trial: you keep all work, all accounts and the audit, whether or not you continue. A provider confident in their work will accept that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a freelancer cheaper than an SEO agency?

Often, because there are no account managers in between — but compare the monthly work delivered, not just the fee.

Can a freelancer handle a large website?

For technical SEO and structure, yes. For very high content volume every month, an agency or a team may be faster.

What if my freelancer becomes unavailable?

Keep ownership of every account and keep work documented, so anyone can continue. That protects you with agencies too.

Key Takeaways

  • Agencies win on capacity; freelancers win on speed and direct contact.
  • Ask who does the work and whether they can change the site themselves.
  • Own every account, whoever you hire.
