SEO for a Small Business Website: A 30-Day Plan
In short
No jargon, no tools you have to buy. Four weeks of SEO work a small business can do — or check its developer has done — to get found on Google.
Most small business websites don't need advanced SEO. They need the basics done properly once, then kept up. Here is the plan I follow for a new small business site, week by week. Every step uses free Google tools.
Week 1: make sure Google can find every page
Add the site to Google Search Console, submit the sitemap, and use the URL Inspection tool on your home page and main service pages. Fix anything marked as not indexed. Check robots.txt doesn't block important pages.
Week 2: one page per service, one clear title each
Each service you want to be found for needs its own page with a clear title (“Bridal makeup in Science City, Ahmedabad”, not “Services”), a heading that matches, and real details: what's included, who it's for, how to book. Write for customers first.
Week 3: local signals
Complete your Google Business Profile, make sure your name, address and phone match the website exactly, and add LocalBusiness structured data. If you serve several areas, add an honest page per area you actually serve.
Week 4: speed, photos and answers
Check PageSpeed Insights on mobile, compress large images and give them descriptive alt text. Add a short FAQ to each service page answering what customers actually ask on WhatsApp — this helps both Google and AI assistants.
After 30 days: measure enquiries, not just rankings
Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and form enquiries from Google. Rankings are a means; enquiries are the point. Review Search Console monthly for the queries you appear for and improve the pages they land on.
Common mistakes that undo the plan
A few things regularly cancel out the work above. Changing page URLs without redirects throws away what Google already knows. Copying service text from competitors or manufacturers gives Google no reason to prefer your page. Building separate thin pages for dozens of cities you don't serve is treated as doorway pages.
And the most common one: launching a new website without checking that the old pages redirect to the new ones. Always map old URLs to new before a redesign goes live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do SEO for my small business myself?
Yes, the basics in this plan need no paid tools. Technical fixes may need your developer.
How soon will I see results?
Indexing can happen within days; rankings and enquiries usually build over weeks to months, depending on competition.
Do I need a blog for SEO?
Not at first. Strong service and location pages matter more for a small business; articles help later for questions customers ask.
