Keyword Research for a Small Business, Without Paid Tools

Add ANKITAI as a preferred source on Google

In short

You don't need an expensive SEO tool to find what your customers type. Google itself shows you — in autocomplete, in Search Console and in the questions people ask. Here's the free method I use for clients.

Paid keyword tools are useful for agencies tracking thousands of terms. A small business needs something simpler: the 30–50 phrases its real customers use, grouped by intent. Every source below is free, and three of them come straight from Google.

Start with what customers already ask you

Before opening any tool, write down the questions you hear on calls, WhatsApp and at the counter for one week. “Do you do home visits?”, “How much for a root canal?”, “Are you open on Sunday?” Those are keywords in the customer's own words — and usually the ones competitors miss.

Use Google autocomplete, letter by letter

Type your main service into Google and stop before pressing Enter. The suggestions are what people commonly search. Then add a space and each letter of the alphabet — “dentist in surat a”, “dentist in surat b” — to see more. For this site's own research I collected thousands of suggestions this way.

  • Add “near me”, “cost”, “best”, “how to” and “vs” to your service.
  • Add your city and nearby areas.
  • Note questions starting with how, what, why, which.

Read People Also Ask and related searches

Search your main terms and open the “People also ask” box and the related searches at the bottom. Each question is a section — or a whole page — you can answer better than anyone else.

Check Search Console if your site is live

The Performance report shows the exact queries that already bring impressions. Sort by impressions and look for queries where you appear but rarely get clicks: those pages need a clearer title or a better answer.

Group keywords by intent, not by word

Put each phrase into one of three buckets: ready to buy (“dentist near me open now”), comparing (“clear aligners vs braces cost”), and learning (“why do gums bleed”). Buying phrases belong on service pages; comparing and learning phrases suit articles and FAQs that link back to the service.

Turn the list into pages

Once grouped, each buying-intent group usually becomes one service page, each comparison group one guide, and the learning questions become FAQs or short articles that link to the service. If two phrases would lead to the same page, they belong to the same group. Don't create separate pages for “dentist in Surat” and “dental clinic Surat” — they're one intent.

Keep a simple keyword sheet

A spreadsheet with four columns is enough: the phrase, its intent, the page that should answer it, and whether that page exists yet. Review it every month with fresh Search Console data — new queries will appear that you never thought of, often in Hindi or Gujarati spelled in English letters.

  • Phrase as customers type it.
  • Intent: buying / comparing / learning.
  • Target page URL.
  • Status: live, to write, to improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Ahrefs or Semrush for a small business?

Not to start. Autocomplete, People Also Ask, Search Console and your own enquiries give enough to plan the first pages. Paid tools help later with volumes and competitors.

How many keywords should one page target?

One main topic per page, with its close variations. Don't build separate pages for words that mean the same thing.

Does Google autocomplete show search volume?

No. It shows common searches, not how many. Use it to find the words people use, then let Search Console show what actually brings impressions.

Key Takeaways

  • Start from real customer questions.
  • Mine autocomplete with the alphabet and question words.
  • Group by intent: buying, comparing, learning.
